Treatment for Ant Infestations

Ant Control Treatment

There are over 15,000 species of ants in the world, around 1,300 of which live in Australia. Ant colonies can be difficult to remove, simply because of their sheer number. This is why you need a team of professional pest controllers to find the nests. At Eco Pest Control Sydney, we can help find and eradicate any colony in your home.

How We Treat Ants

We treat ants in a similar way that we treat termites: remove, control, and prevent. First, we will determine where the infestation is and will use live spraying to kill the ants. We will also use baits, traps, and stations to kill ants that may have remained. Once the house has been treated, we will set up a barrier to prevent other ants from coming.

Why Ants Are Considered a Pest

Ants very rarely carry disease, as they are relatively clean creatures – although they can occasionally carry bacteria on their legs. In most cases, ants are pests because they ruin your property and damage your food. Like termites, they have a taste for cellulose and other similar foods, meaning that they will eat through your home’s wood, as well as contaminate the food in your pantry.

Common Species of Ants in Sydney

Sidney is typically home to the following species of ants:

  • Black House Ant: They’re dark in colour and like to invade homes with lots of clutter (it’s easier for them to hide).
  • Argentine Ant: Brown coloured ants – they bite rather than sting and can follow food trails over a long distance.
  • Carpenter Ants: Common in Sydney households, they are wood-eating ants and can cause a lot of damage to the home structure.
  • Fire Ant: They have a copper-coloured body and small size, with a fairly painful bite.

Common Signs of an Ant Infestation

Ant infestations are typically clear when you see more than one ant in your house. Scouts will first check out your home for food and will alert the rest of the colony. Once they move, you will have an infestation.

How Do You Know You Have an Ant Problem?

You know you have an ant problem when you begin seeing the following signs:

  • Ant sightings
  • Piles of dirt in and around the house
  • Hollow sounds coming from the beams of your house
  • Fragile wood structure
  • Rustling sound coming from the walls

Treatment Tips and Advice for Ants

Once a scout gets to your home and alerts the other ants, an infestation might follow suit shortly. With that in mind, certain things may discourage a scout and prevent a potential colony from moving into your home.

  1. Frequent Cleaning: Ants come where they believe they have a food source. By cleaning frequently, you remove crumbs that can lead to an infestation.
  2. Diatomaceous Earth: Also known as silicon dioxide, this is a fossil powder that absorbs the oils from an insect’s exoskeleton. While it is not a poison, it will kill the ants and other small insects that walk over it.
  3. Black or Red Pepper: Ants hate black and red cayenne pepper because they find the smell to be irritating. To keep the ants from coming in, sprinkle ground cayenne pepper behind appliances and on baseboards.
  4. Peppermint: Many insects hate peppermint – ants included. You may create a spray using peppermint essential oil and apply it on baseboards and windows. You may also grow peppermint to keep the smell in permanently.
  5. White Vinegar: White vinegar not only repels ants, but it also kills them. Mix one part water and one part white vinegar in a bucket, and use it to clean the floors. This will deter potential scouts.
  6. Coffee Grounds: After you drink your coffee, do not throw away the coffee grounds. Sprinkle them on a disposable surface (a piece of paper or an index card) and leave them where ants usually gather.
  7. Liquid Detergent and Glass Cleaner: When scouts come around your home, they leave a pheromone trail. A mix of glass cleaner and liquid detergent is believed to disrupt that pheromone trail and prevent the ants from gathering.
  8. Boric Acid: Boric acid is typically used for cleaning, but it can also be used for killing ants. Prepare a “bait” with 8 teaspoons of sugar, ½ teaspoon of boric acid, and warm water, in which you saturate cotton balls. This can help you kill an entire ant colony in just a few weeks.
  9. Lemons: Ants are also deterred by lemon juice, as they hate its strong scent. It also destroys their trail and prevents them from gathering.
  10. Ant Barrier: A professionally installed ant barrier can prevent the ants from entering your home altogether. At Eco Pest Control Sydney, we can help you install such a barrier.
